May 24, 2017 - Working remotely and the LIMS solutions
Now that cell phone and internet coverage are virtually everywhere, it is extremely difficult to disconnect from work. Believe me, I know; I’ve been hiking up the side of a mountain in NC and still received phone calls and emails. Answering work related phone calls while out of breath and telling your five year old to be quiet at the same time can be quite a challenge. However, that kind of service, whether in sales or technical support, is expected these days. Professionally, you are expected to be connected.

March 22, 2017 - Keeping a LIMS up to date with State and Federal EPA regulations
A LIMS is a great and almost necessary tool in any modern day environmental laboratory, whether commercial, state or municipal. In a highly regulated community, the LIMS, like everything else in the laboratory, must evolve. Some evolutions are complex, however, 99% of them are very simple and in many ways, mostly a matter of proper record keeping.

March 15, 2017 - LIMS in academics, then and now
I recently read, or I should say reread, an article written by Douglas Perry for the American Chemical Society in Today’s Chemist at Work titled “LIMS in the academic world” (https://pubs.acs.org/subscribe/archive/tcaw/11/i01/html/01comp.html). The article was published in January of 2002. Almost exactly fifteen years later, most of the well discussed points are still valid. LIMS has not truly found a home in academic settings despite the fact it is rare to see an operating commercial laboratory in any business sector without some sort of LIMS in place today.

February 15, 2017 - A hidden benefit within a LIMS: Human Resource information for laboratory personnel
Many of the broader laboratory based benefits of LIMS are well known: LIMS track samples from entry into the laboratory (in some cases even the field data and collection) to final analysis and disposal; LIMS track and document reagent and standards usage within the laboratory; LIMS generate reports and electronic data deliverables (EDDs). However, one important and often overlooked feature is that LIMS can also track and record human resource (HR) information.

January 11, 2017 - Call for Talks - NEMC Session - LIMS in the Modern Laboratory
In today’s environmental and/or municipal laboratory, the LIMS is playing an ever more critical role in centralizing and making available all data. LIMS are called on to help laboratories adhere to stricter quality control, handle more one-off projects, work with more third party programs and produce more advanced reports while maintaining stringent IT protocol. In this session, talks may include discussion on APIs, data analytics, advanced reporting modules both internal and external, SaaS or PaaS agreements versus internally housed LIMS, one-off applications, internal quality control “modules”, etc.

December 07, 2016 - The Evolution of a COTS LIMS through One-Off Applications and Client Ideas
Like many laboratory products, LIMS change with evolving technology and regulations as well as client ideas. In the past, I’ve worked with a laboratory products manufacturer who made great profits off of client ideas for new products. There is nothing that rings the ear of a consumable products company owner like “I’d give a dollar each for…”

November 09, 2016 - Historical Data and the New LIMS
I recently received a call from a very nice municipal laboratory director and the conversation regarding LIMS, LIMS implementation, good LIMS implementers turned towards historical data. I laughed and thanked her for the idea of this article. I really should have thought of it. With virtually every LIMS sale whether it be to a municipality, commercial laboratory or university, the issue of historical data comes up.

Most laboratories purchasing a LIMS, if they are replacing an old LIMS or are buying their first, have been in operation for some time. As we are all aware, historical data generally must be kept on record for some period of time based on various regulations and is often wanted for general trending information. In many cases, that period of time is five years. So, now what?

October 12, 2016 - Expedited LIMS Data to GIS/AutoCAD Reporting
The successive and successful relationship between environmental based laboratories and engineering companies has long been vital for both entities. Fortunately, with the adoption of modern LIMS in laboratories, in conjunction with advanced software tools available to engineering companies, these important ties have become quicker, less labor intensive, and more reliable.

October 05, 2016 - Quality Control and the University Application of a COTS LIMS
Proper quality control is critical for the production of any valid laboratory data, whether regulatory or research. However, how this quality control is applied may vary greatly depending upon the application. In the regulated environmental community, set rules are applied to the type, limits of and number of quality control samples. These rules are well established and published by various organizations.

September 28, 2016 - Interfacing LIMS to Other Commercially Available Software Packages
A LIMS by its name is a laboratory information management system. LIMS over the years have increased in their breadth of coverage, however, at no point is a LIMS a full accounting package or geographic information system (GIS) nor does a true LIMS replace a customized enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. A LIMS though may be very effectively interfaced with other software platforms to provide a business entity the full breadth of information and ability it requires.

September 21, 2016 - Benefits of a LIMS implementer’s firsthand laboratory knowledge
No LIMS, no matter how great it may be, is one hundred percent beneficial without proper implementation and training. Modern day LIMS are too complex with too many functions to truly just figure out on your own. However, many times, a LIMS implementation has failed simply because the implementer understood the computer system but fail to comprehend the laboratory itself or vice versa.

May 25, 2016 - One instance, a second server or a second lab ID?
Many laboratories have at least two or more individual laboratories in their company’s organization. These laboratories may be close together or across the country; They may fall under similar or much different regulatory environments; They may act as parts of a whole or as an individual laboratory, quite literally subbing out samples to sister laboratories much like they would to any sub-contract laboratory. Upon occasion, even simple communication via the internet may be sporadic. Each laboratory is unique in its organization and thus there are different answers as to what will fit a particular laboratory best when implementing a LIMS.

April 06, 2016 - Sample Receipt Checklist
When logging in samples, laboratories must verify the conditions under which the samples were received. The most efficient way to do this is a checklist within the LIMS. This not only helps automate the process, it also records the checklist automatically, adding to the necessary paper trail for audits.

March 16, 2016 - LIMS - Buy or Build?
Many laboratory directors from different disciplines have asked this one question regarding LIMS: “Should we buy a LIMS or build our own?” In the early 90s and into the mid-2000s, it was not uncommon for a laboratory to create their own LIMS from scratch rather than using the commercially available options. Upon occasion, those laboratories would purchase an open source code LIMS and then hire programmers to make that LIMS their own.

March 02, 2016 - The Legacy LIMS Folly
Many laboratories face this same issue. A dated, legacy LIMS exist. It lacks needed capabilities. It cannot be remotely accessed. No client portal exists. It does not integrate with all of the newer instruments. It cannot produce new, needed reports. It cannot effectively update QC reports. Its query functions are extremely limited. It is failing under the higher workload. It cannot operate on the “new” computers. Yet, it, that old LIMS, is vital to the day to day operation of the laboratory. “If we could just get by this one more year… We’ll replace it next year!” And that has been said for five years straight.

February 03, 2016 - Khemia Omega 11: Ad Hoc Queries
In almost every laboratory, a group of standard queries are developed within the LIMS. This prearranged group of queries covers 80-90% of the queries most laboratories and analysts will ever need. It is that “other” 10-20% of unique queries that can and will be the sticking point. It is often the lack of quick, customizable queries that can trip up productivity or limit quality control checks. Khemia’s Omega 11 offers an ad hoc query writer to overcome this.

January 13, 2016 - Khemia Software - LIMS Scheduler
In the current laboratory setting, a LIMS is being asked to account for far more than just laboratory work. A prominent example is the need for an information management system to organize routine and non-routine events. To meet these ever expanding requirements, Khemia Software has developed a Scheduler feature that helps laboratories better prepare for field sampling, sample pickups and other laboratory tasks.
